Crazy few days . . .
Thank you all for the comments and emails re: the last post. Knowing I have support, even via the net definitely helps!
We’ve had a crazy couple of days this week; we new it would be nuts on Monday and Tuesday but we didn’t have any idea just how nuts.
Monday we had our next scheduled Drs apt. We had to be at the hospital by 8:30, which is early for us to manage to get anywhere . . . the little guy stayed with Nonna since I want to be able to focus on the new baby at these appointments, not chasing down a toddler. It turned out to be a very good thing that we left him behind.
The ultrasound showed that the fluid in the back of the baby’s neck was thicker than the range they consider normal, only by 3 tenths of a milimeter but enough that they were concerned. I guess that combined with my age means there is a possiblity of problems . . . so after we saw our Dr and talked to her about the test results and all the other stuff that was already on our list before we walked in the, we went down the hall for a chat with someone in the genetic counciling department . . .
Long story somewhat shorter, we wound up having a test called a CVS. Basically they stick a big needle through the belly and into the uterus and and take a sample of the placenta. And yeah, it hurt quite a bit.
They also mentioned that I needed a shot because I am Rh negative. Huh? Last pregnancy they said I was Rh positive and never gave me any shots . . . what the ???? So after all lot of back and forth with Drs and nurses and the lab we determined that there had been a mix up last pregnancy and that I really am Rh negative. They drew blood to test for antibodies and gave me the shot.
We went home to wait the 24-48 hours for the inital round of test results and spent a very sleeplesss night.
Tuesday I was scheduled to have Jury Duty. Generally not something I would look forward to anyway . . . but now with not knowing if the baby is okay and on basically no sleep and I had to leave home by 6:45 to catch a bus into town (I wasn’t driving, esp. with the Red Socks Parade happening!) and manged to get there in time. I lucked out that the clerk in charge of the Jury pool that day took pity on me and gave me the only other comfortable chair (other than his own) to sit in and I was allowed to take my knitting (bamboo needles) and so I got a chunk of the Irish Hiking Scarf done while I was there. I also lucked out that I didn’t get sent into a court room and ended up leaving there by 12:30 and caught the bus quick and got home by 1:00. I picked up the toddler. Nonna was very glad to seem me after having him 2 days in a row! And we even got in our afternoon nap which was very necessary.
Later that afternoon the genetic coucilor called us with the preliminary results of the testing they had done. It appears that everything is just fine. She said it was a very good test and though they are still running the “full panel” (results in 10 days) she doesn’t anticipate any surprise with it. And the antibody test came back negative; which means I haven’t developed antibodies to Rh positive blood and that means the baby should be just fine on that count. They will give me another shot at 28 weeks and again at delivery just in case we decided to have another though we aren’t planning to.
The other upside of all this was that, though it was too early to determine the sex of the baby by Ultrasound, they were able to tell us based on the CVS. Our new little one is a Girl!
I’m already planning a shopping trip for some pink yarn and looking at sweater patterns for girls! This is going to be so much fun. And we are naming her after my Grandmother, though we’re using the italian version of the name, with her middle name after Dom’s unlcle (the girls version of the name) and so it will be her own name but also family names.
Lucky for us my brother has sent tons of girl clothes over from my neices . . .and now I just have to sort it all by size etc and can get ready. I’m glad I can do all that now before I get too big or before I have a baby and a toddler to watch while trying to straighten everything . . .much easier!
And on that note, I’m off to fix lunch and then get cracking on those boxes!
