Designing, Ramblings

The secret world of Haute Couture

I watched this show last night on PBS, its playing several more times in the next few days.  I don’t normally get into shows about how people spend thousands (or in this case, sometimes hundreds of thousands) of dollars on clothing . . . but somehow, I couldn’t change the channel.  Pehaps it was the way it was presented, but there was something utterly facinating about watching the process that the designers go through to get these few pieces of clothing to the handful of people who will ever wear them.  The detail that goes into the construction of a single piece was incredible . . . watching someone embroider delicate motifs on to a bit of fabric that will become a skirt or hand stitch feathers to a dress that they follow the creation of from sketch to a spread in Vogue.

At one point in the show they mentioned that the average garment requires something like a hundred and fifty hours of handcrafting to become what you see on the runways.  I couldn’t help but think, how many of us who knit spend that much time on a sweater? Does that mean in some ways our finished projects are in some way related to Haute Couture?

Home & Family

Catching up: Post 1

We’ve had so much going on since I last posted that its hard to even know where to begin! I’m going to start with all the non-knitting content, mostly because those are the photos I’ve been able to load so far . . .

Birthdays!

We had a birthday party! The little guy is now offically 2 years old! We had family and some friend (we tried to keep it a bit smaller than last year) and made sure there were lots of kids.

with the cousins Here  he is with two of his cousins, Nonna was kind enough to bring the girls over for the party. Marianna is now 5 and Mira Bella is 2.

Newest member of the Family And here is the newest little member of the family, my husband’s nephew’s son, Steven Thomas at about a month old.  This is the little guy I knit the original Delicate Beginnings sweater for . . . though it was a little too warm for it at the party.

The Godfather Here is the Godfather, Joseph and his wife Linda enjoying some cake . . . we were very glad they were able to make it.

Blowing out the candles  Here is the Birthday Boy blowing out his candles. Notice the “Lightening McQueen” candle on there for luck?

All the kids Here are the little guests enjoying a piece of cake with the Birthday Boy; YUM!

Birthday Bike And here is the big Birthday gift: His very first Bike! Notice, again with the “Cars” theme, he loves, loves, loves it! Not that he can ride it quite yet, but he loves to sit on it or push it around the yard.

 While we’re talking about parties:

We also went to Rickie’s Birthday party the day before, though I couldn’t get the camera to work so I don’t have a photo of that . . . and later in the month we went to “Big Rick’s” birthday party . . . and our own little niece, Allison turned one this month.

waiting for cake The Birthday Girl waiting for her very first piece of cake.

Big pool While we were there the little guy got to go in a “big pool”, as in the over his head kind, for the very first time.  He loved it!

 New arrivals

The same day as Cousin Alli’s party we had to make a quick trip to the central post office in Lynn (it was a Sunday by the way) and look what had arrived!

New arrivals Yes, we really did! We’ve got chickens! 27 of them to be exact.  This was them, still in the box they arrived in, at about 1 day old.  Aren’t they adorable? We ordered them about a month ago . . . its something we’ve talked about for a few years now but after reading about them from [Kristen N.] ’s blog and then following the link to McMurray’s I just couldn’t resist.

Holding a  The little guy has taken to calling them “cheaps” as we kept making “cheap, cheap” noises at them on the way home.  This was his first time holding one.  He has been very responsible and gentle with them.  He helps to feed them, give them clean water and even clean up after them.  Not bad for 2, huh?

10 days old Here they are again at about 10 days old now. They had to be moved from the 2 bunny cages in the kitchen to a larger encloser out in Daddy’s workshop.  We expect they will stay here until they are between 6 and 8 weeks old, depending on how fast their feathers come in and they get big enough to scare off cats! At the moment, the cats are thinking chicken dinner . . .  and they aren’t entirely wrong as currently 7 of these guys (the ones that look yellow) are destined to become Sunday dinners.  The others we are keeping as a “Laying Flock” and from the estimates I found on the sites about the different kinds, we can expect to wind up with nearly 5 dozen eggs a week.

We got a number of different types of chickens: A Buttercup Rooster (Dom wanted him), Araucanas (which lay blue & green eggs), Black Austolopes, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rocks, Buff Rocks and White Rocks.  We’re planning to give one of the White Rocks to a neighbor who needs a new Rooster (they were “straight run” so we are assuming there will be a rooster to give) and plan to keep 2 White Rock hens so there will be a few white eggs in the basket.

Coop site Once they are big enough to scare off the cats and don’t need a heated environment anymore they will be moving to their very own coop, as yet to be built.  This is approx. how big the coop will be (8×8) and the run will come toward the side I was standing on when I took this picture and run the length of the garden.  If all goes well, the chickens will have access to falling Mulberries next summer, see:

Mulberries! This is one of two Mulberry trees in the yard though its the only one that bears fruit (I believe the other is male) and the “chicken run” should end jus under this tree enough for them to get some of the fallen berries.  We also plan to let them loose some of the time so they can chase the bugs out of the rest of the yard and get more exercise.

Garden

I haven’t really done much with the garden this year . . . everytime I try to get out there I find 6 other things to do instead.

Guard rail Dom did manage to put in a guard rail for my little garden bed inside the play area.  It really need it as “someone” kept running things over with cars and trucks.  Its still waiting for the little front piece that will go outside the posts and create a small bed for some annuals.  And I need to start digging things up a bit at a time and filling it with a good mix of compost, topsoil and peat so that we will wind up with a nice raised bed (and better soil then the dry clay there now).  I’ve had a few flowers this year, despite the neglect.

Hollyhocks This hollyhock plant has come back year after year now and I love the color of the blossoms on it.  I have to try to remember to save some of the seeds and see if I can get a few more of them to grow next year.

I’m going to save the knitting content for a second post, later today if I can or sometime tomorrow. I want to get and organize lots of photos of everything I’ve been working on so I can add them as well.  I’ve got lots of fiber stuff to share and I’m even working on cooking up a contest . . .  so stay tuned!

2007 Projects, Swaps

Hogwarts Sock Swap

First of all, have you seen this? Sign-ups started on the 14th and only 150 people are being admitted so if your interest now is the time!

I signed up earlier today and I’ve been admitted to Hogwarts as a First-year. As part of the Swap I’ve been asked to complete the following, so here it is:

Hogwarts Sock Swap Questionnaire

  1. What Hogwarts house have you been sorted into? Ravenclaw
  2. Shoe size? US 9
    Foot Length? 10 inches
    Foot Circumference? 7 inches
  3. List your three favorite double-point needle brands, including size and length.
Any bamboo or wood is fine, I tend to use size 0 and 1 mostly but sometimes use 2
  4. Would you like to try a new brand needle? If so, which brand? Size? Length? Surprise me, see above.
If you are a RAVENCLAW, do you prefer the colors in the film or the book? Do you have a strong preference? I am a Ravenclaw and I prefer the film colors of med. blue and silver, thanks for asking!
  5. Allergies? Do you have any? Not unless you plan to include peppers in the socks . . .
  6. Will your knitting be exposed to smoke or animals? Yes, we have a dog, 2 cats and chickens but no smokers.
  7. Are you an international participant (outside US)? No
  8. Are you willing to have an international Hogwarts Sock Pal? I’d prefer a US pal, but international is okay if needed.

I’m planning to go see the movie tomorrow night with a dear friend who just moved back here from Seattle. I’m actually very excited that she is here since it means I will have someone to go to the movies with from time to time. I think at this point its been more than 2 years since I went!

Actually, I’m in a weird place with my knitting projects right now. I’ve finished the toddler socks and they almost match; I ran a little short at the very toe of the 2nd sock so the toes are different. But one of the great things about 2 year old boys is they don’t really care if the toes are different, he just loves having bright socks.

I’ve got baby sweaters that I need to work on as the little ones are starting to arrive at quite a pace now and I’m behind on sweaters . . .

I’ve got a list of things longer than my arm that I either need to start or I’ve been asked to start or are ideas for patterns etc. but nothing really set up to go right now. . . .

And I’ve just taken Fern back out of exhile and hope to make some progress on it over the next few weeks. Ideally I’d like to finish it by the time the weater is cool enough to wear it regularly. We’ll see since so far I’ve only done 3 more rows (though since I’m working front and back at the same time and there are 5 different charts which I’m on 3 different sets of row numbers with that really isn’t so bad.

I’m just wondering what I’m going to knit tomorrow night at the movies? I know I can’t sit still through a whole movie, even a movie I like, without knitting something. Just won’t happen.

I’ve got tons of other stuff to share but it all requires photos . . . either photos that need to be taken or photos that are waiting to be release from the camera. If things go well tomorrow I’ll try for another update . . . wish me luck on the project hunting!

Designing, Dyeing, Free Patterns, Inspirations Yarn, Swaps

Doesn’t this look like fun?

I just signed up for this and think it will be a lot of fun. For the first round its only open to 25 people and you have to dye a skein of sock yarn to swap with someone. I think I can do that ; )

I actually love doing swaps, I love sending stuff off and I love getting things in the mail (and yes, that is part of why my stash is sooo incredibly large) but its fun! And hey, there are worse things I could be doing, right?

Another dye day come and gone

I dyed yarn 3 days this past week and still have some hanging on the clothes line in the back yard drying . . . I’m just really hoping it doesn’t rain! I actually had help with the dyeing (and tons of skeining) this time as A is on summer vacation and available. She’s going away in August so I really only have help for July so we are planning to do a lot of dyeing the next couple of weeks. . . . We’ve worked on batches of the colorways that are for the LYS and worked on creating some of the new colorways that will be up this Fall. I really like some of what we came up with . . . . I’m hoping to bring the lot with me to knitting on Monday night so I can see what some other knitters think of it.

Designs on designing

The design bug has bitten me again. I’ve got a few more inches of baby toddler sock to finish up and then I’m going to start working on the next design. I’ve got a list of the things I want to work on and both fortunately and unfortunately its been growing fast than I can get to things lately. Now if I can just hold onto the momentum behind each idea long enough to get to it . . .

Tomorrow is nuts here, we’re having brunch “in town” with some friends who are passing through from out of state on their way to pick up the kids from camp . . . and then we are headed north to my niece’s first birthday party! Then Monday, A is coming back and we’re planning to dye up a whole bunch more yarn . . . off to finish that sock!
